Church of Vytautas the Great, Kaunas – Cinematic Gothic Journey | Oldest Church in the City

This cinematic video explores the Church of Vytautas the Great (Vytauto Didžiojo bažnyčia), the oldest church in Kaunas and one of the most important Gothic architectural monuments in Lithuania.

Built around 1400 on the north bank of the Neman River, the church was commissioned by Vytautas the Great as a gesture of gratitude after the Battle of Vorskla River. It was originally constructed for Order of Friars Minor and foreign merchants.

The church is architecturally unique, featuring the only Gothic cross-shaped floor plan in Lithuania with side chapels, making it a rare example of medieval religious architecture in the region.

Throughout its history, the building has experienced repeated destruction and repurposing. It was damaged by floods, burned during the Napoleonic Wars, later converted into an Orthodox church, then used as military barracks and a warehouse during different occupations. It was eventually returned to the Catholic Church in 1919 and restored in the 20th century.

The video highlights the church’s historical layers, architectural uniqueness, and its strong presence within the Old Town of Kaunas, offering a cinematic perspective on one of Lithuania’s most resilient heritage sites.
